Mettler Toledo Launches NewClassic Semi-Micro Balances for Speedier, Easier Weighing

METTLER TOLEDO’s new range of NewClassic MS Semi-Micro Balances enhances efficiency by shortening operation time by up to 30 percent while providing accurate and reliable results. The seconds trimmed away from each step in repetitive weighing operations by the new balances quickly accumulate during a busy day in the laboratory, helping users boost productivity. A leading global supplier of precision instruments and services, METTLER TOLEDO also optimized the usability of its new balance range with features for easy reading and cleaning.

Laboratory time savings are achieved with the NewClassic MS Semi-Micro Balances’ ErgoDoor, which reduces the weighing process to a single action. This feature allows users to open the right door with the left hand or vice versa and simultaneously insert samples with the other hand for weighing. Weighing results appear in large, bright digits on the balances’ high-contrast display (HCD) and can be clearly read from a distance or at awkward angles.

Ease-of-use is further enhanced through the programmable SmartKeys that allow one touch access to often-used functions, such as built-in applications like formulation, percent or statistics, and totaling. The balances allow users to operate the systems in their own language. Further, a QuickLock enables users to quickly dismantle and reassemble the draft shield to streamline cleaning and maintenance and reduce downtime.

To eliminate transcription errors, the results provided by the METTLER TOLEDO NewClassic MS Semi-Micro Balances can be printed or directly imported without the need for additional software, facilitating compliance with Good Laboratory Practice (GLP) and Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) standards. Human error is further reduced with the systems’ built-in date and time function.

Unrivaled in accuracy, NewClassic MS Semi-Micro Balances are equipped with the HiRes Technology (HRT) weighing cell and Fully Automated Calibration Technology (FACT), which allows the balance to automatically perform adjustment and linearization. With adjustable feet and a clearly visible level indicator, the balances allow users to easily stabilize the instruments for enhanced reliability of results.

METTLER TOLEDO specializes in the area of precision instruments for professional use. METTLER TOLEDO laboratory instruments are used in research, scientific, drug discovery, and quality control labs, amongst many others in the pharmaceutical, chemical, food and cosmetics industries. METTLER TOLEDO comprehensive industrial solutions cover the various steps in a host of manufacturing processes at many of the same customers that laboratory serves. Solutions range from receiving raw materials through various manufacturing processes, in-line process control and end-of-line packaging control, to logistics and shipping. Increasingly, these solutions are fully integrated into the customer’s IT environment, helping automate their workflows. Transinsight and antibodies-online develop Software for semantic Gene and Protein Identification

Since July 2009 Transinsight GmbH and antibodiesonline
GmbH partner together with TU Dresden and RESprotect GmbH to develop and deploy new
semantic search technologies for the Life-Science industry. Their joint efforts are funded by the
THESEUS research program from the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology
(BMWi). With only a few months into the project, the partnering companies are now able to
demonstrate a first outcome of their research to the public: Research antibodies that semantically fit to genes and proteins discussed within a certain biomedical publication are automatically suggested to the reader on Transinsight’s search engine http://www.GoPubMed.com.

“The scientist, who keeps himself up-to-date on recent biomedical publications with our knowledgebased search engine GoPubMed.com is now further supported by suggestions of semantically fitting research products for his/her specific research needs” says Dr. Michael R. Alvers, founder and CEO of Transinsight GmbH. The time consuming search for the right research antibody to a specific research question is one of the key pains in proteomics and genomics laboratories. Any simplification of this search problem, which delivers correct information instead of unhelpful, generic advertising, is welcome within the scientific community. Searching, finding and ordering the right research antibody from within a global offer of 500.000 products from more than 500 suppliers worldwide is normally a tedious work. To apply semantic, knowledge driven product recommendations to biomedical publications and thus to allow to significantly reduce the workload for the scientist always in need of research products is a truly innovative approach.

“Once the scientist has chosen a product of interest, antibodies-online GmbH takes care of all the rest, i.e. procurement of the desired products from anywhere around the world”, adds Dr. Andreas Kessell, founder and managing director of antibodies-online GmbH. “Our customer is not bound to the portfolio of a single supplier but can chose from a neutral portfolio of research antibodies, that are suggested with the biomedical publications” says Dr. Kessell.

The software solution behind this innovative offer of the partnering companies Transinsight und
antibodies-online is currently being developed within the research program THESEUS. Transinsight’s existing semantic search platform already detects genes and proteins reliably in scientific publications and these results can be linked to the products on antibodies-online.com. “With the launch of this first prototype we managed the initial integration of the information provided on the two platforms of the partnering companies however, the list of tasks to be taken on remains long” explains Dr. Alvers.

Transinsight develops knowledge-based semantic solutions in the Life Sciences. Their flagship
products http://www.Go3R.org and http://www.GoPubMed.com, renowned biomedical search engines, are the
first knowledge-based search systems of the next generation not only for the Life Sciences on the
internet. In acknowledgement of the technologies developed by the company, Transinsight has
repeatedly been honored with international awards i.e. the reddot design award best of the best 2009
and the German Industry Prize 2010. The firm works in close collaboration with the Dresden University of Technology. Selected customers are: Unilever, BASF, BfR, Statoil, RWE, Abca

Nicaraguan Island Declared World Biosphere Reserve by UNESCO

Ometepe Island, located in Lake Nicaragua, recently became Nicaragua’s third place in the World Network of Biosphere Reserves. The nomination was approved unanimously by the 22nd Session of the International Coordinating Council of the Man and the Biosphere Program (MAB) of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization, UNESCO.

Ometepe, composed of two volcanoes (Madera and Concepcion), is considered the largest island in the world located within a freshwater lake. According to the UNESCO, the island has plenty of pre-Columbian archaeological ruins, petroglyphs, statues and ceramics that show the antiquity of human settlement on its soil.

The island is surrounded by Lake Nicaragua, an important source of freshwater supply hosting numerous underwater species, such as sawfish and freshwater sharks.

With this classification, Ometepe Island will have access to funding and technical assistance from the UNESCO, and will become a world example of how human beings can live in harmony with nature and generate economic development without creating a negative impact on the environment.

With the addition of Ometepe Island, Nicaragua now contains three sites within the World Network of Biosphere Reserves. The first, granted in 1997, was the Bosawas, the largest unaltered tropical forest in Central America, with approximately 800,000 hectares covering 14 percent of the country and has been, throughout history, the living space of the ethnic communities of the Mayangnas and Miskitos.

Subsequently, in 2003, the UNESCO included the San Juan River reserve in southeastern Nicaragua, a region that concentrates a high amount of biodiversity in rain forests, important areas of forest development and sources of surface and subterranean water.

Biosphere reserves are sites recognized under the UNESCO’s MAB Program, which innovate and demonstrate approaches to conservation and sustainable development. They are under national sovereign jurisdiction, and share their experience and ideas nationally, regionally and internationally within the World Network of Biosphere Reserves. There are 564 sites worldwide in 109 countries.

MAB proposes an interdisciplinary research agenda and capacity building aiming to improve the relationship of people with their environment globally. Launched in the early 1970s, it targets the ecological, social and economic dimensions of biodiversity loss. It uses its World Network of Biosphere Reserves as vehicles for knowledge-sharing, research and monitoring, education and training, and participatory decision-making.
