Keeping Miners Safe CAD Perfect Conversion of Coal Mine Maps for Kelly Surveying

In West Virginia, Pennsylvania and other states, geologists are mapping coal beds in order to provide mining companies with accurate information relative to the mining work in which they are engaged. A major part of these mapping projects includes accurate mapping of old mines that may be located under or close to an active mine site. Knowing exactly where these old mines are located is important to miner safety. Old mines can be full of gas and water. It can be disastrous for an active mining project to inadvertently tap into one of these old mines. The new mine can rapidly become full of noxious gas or rapidly flooded with water causing injuries and loss of life.

One West Virginia firm who is helping with this project is Kelly Surveying. Kenneth Kelly and his employees work hard to provide miners with accurate survey information for their mining projects. One of the more complex processes requires Kelly Surveying to bring information from old paper mining maps into their modern AutoCAD system. Many of these maps are torn, stained, discolored and hard to read. They have to be accurately scanned, cleaned up, and then converted from scanned raster drawings into vector drawings that can be manipulated in AutoCAD.

This is where CAD/CAM Services comes in. CAD/CAM has a proprietary process that enables them to create a “CAD Perfect TM” conversion quickly and inexpensively. With +/- .005″ accuracy, the reproduced maps look like exact copies of the originals, only clean, legible and easier to read. According to Kenneth Kelly, the product that he gets back from CAD/CAM is so perfect that he and his staff are able to reproduce the maps, use the reproductions in the field, locate common surface features such as gas wells, ventilation shafts or other common points and reference into their Geographic Information System (GIS). In addition, Kenneth says that the turnaround time from CAD/CAM is very fast.

“Prior to finding CAD/CAM Services and their CAD Perfect TM conversion services, it would require many hours for our draftsmen to digitize the maps. There are hatch marks and contour lines on mine maps that make the digitizing process very labor intense,” says Kenneth Kelly. “With CAD/CAM, our costs are lower, the conversion is done much more quickly and the accuracy is amazing. We’re very satisfied.”

For over 20 years, CAD/CAM Services has been providing all types of CAD conversions worldwide. CAD/CAM Services is certified by the Department of Defense for CAD Conversion work, and also has been awarded with the AS9100 and GSA certificates. CAD/CAM is experienced in digitizing and converting from any large format media, aperture cards, and film into Cad Perfect AutoCAD, MicroStation, D-Tools, ArcInfo, CATIA and many other CAD systems.
